animal-careAnimal Care

While each ProEgg member has its own distinct mission and values, the members together have a shared commitment to maintaining high standards for animal welfare and biosecurity to ensure the health and well-being of our birds, especially as HPAI still threatens our flocks.

Members ensure their flocks are kept healthy by providing safe living environments and constant access to fresh food and water. Birds are also monitored every day by animal care teams and are treated promptly by veterinarians when needed. Additionally, our members enforce stringent biosecurity measures on their farms to keep birds healthy and to prevent diseases from entering the flocks, including:

  • Restricting access to barns to essential personnel only;
  • Using protective gear, such as biosecurity suits and shoe covers;
  • Washing hands before and after handling birds; and
  • Cleaning and disinfecting equipment and vehicles before entering and leaving the farms.

ProEgg members also participate in voluntary and mandatory animal care programs, such as the United Egg Producers (UEP) Certified Animal Welfare Program. The UEP Certified Animal Welfare Program sets some of the strictest industry standards of hen health and well-being, including an annual compliance assessment conducted by independent, third-party auditors.

Our farms operate each of their facilities with high regard for the environment and with a commitment to being good neighbors within our communities. ProEgg members follow best management practices for protecting the land, air and water on their farms. This includes enforcing nutrient management plans, managing manure, working with local soil and water conservation offices, evolving hen housing to reduce energy use, and recycling and composting when possible.

One of the most important responsibilities our members have is ensuring the safety and quality of the foods we produce. Our members demonstrate their commitment by participating in several state and national voluntary and mandatory farm food safety programs, including:

  • U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Egg Safety Final Rule
  • United Egg Producers’ “5-Star” Egg Safety Program
  • National Poultry Improvement Plan
